LinsPirat LTS Rev2.1 CFW for Nokia 5233/5230/5800/5530/X6 All RMs

Almost all Nokia S60v5 and S^1 phone owners dream of enjoying Symbian Belle on their devices. However, this is a dream that can never come true due to the hardware reservations of the the Nokia devices like 5233, 5230, 5800, 5530, X6, etc. As you know the S60v5 and S^1 phones by Nokia are very poor when it comes to hardware and configuration. Weak processors, low RAM, and the same 360×640 px resolution lcd are the terms that best manifest how careless Nokia, the one time King of the mobile world, is. Probably, due to this lack of insight into the aspirations of the users, Nokia is now struggling and wriggling to reclaim its lost glory.
When they came up with S^3 and Symbian Anna, it seemed that they would learn something from their old mistakes, but they didn’t. Finally, with the arrival of the range of Symbian Belle devices, Nokia made a come back. The Belle phones by Nokia do show some potential, ant that’s why people like us crave to have a Belle device. If we can’t buy a new one, we hope to get the Belle firmware on our S60v5 and S^1 devices.
It is for sure that there can be no fully functional Belle official or custom firmware  for Nokia 5233, 5230, 5800, 5530, X6, etc., but what is wrong with a partly functional custom firmware– a cross hybrid of Symbian Anna and Belle? Yes, you heard it right. A guy named tintinboss has come up an amazing CFW called ‘LinsPirat LTS Rev2.1 CFW‘  for Nokia 5233/5230/5800/5530/X6 All RMs. The CFW is reported to be the best firmware for the S60v5 and S^1 devices.
The developer of the LinsPirat LTS Rev2.1 CFW has made it clear that this new firmware is in no way fully original, but based on the fresh port of C6v41 CFW by Die2mrw007, and that he has borrowed many good things from various modders. Well, that is of no importance to us. All we need is an awesome firmware for our Nokia phone. A few weeks ago tintinboss had released an LinsPirat LTS Rev2.o. The current version is an update to the older one and is tested by hundreds of Nokia S60v5 and S^1 users. That means it is stable and reliable too. Version 2.1 of the CFW shows some great improvements over its predecessor. Tintinboss has integrated the latest version of QT. It means that you will only need to install QT apps on your device. Moreover, he has reworked on the Nokia Music Player, added latest Ovi Store app, smmother KS effects, and improved new Swipe to Answer feature.

How to Install (Full guide)

Notes from Tintinboss:

  • If you hard reset, or Restore Factory Settings on your device, please flash again to get the 5 new equalizer preset and Ovi Maps.
  • Use provided UDA, otherwise you would not get 5 equalizer presets.
  • Use v.51 Core for RM-625 by binh24.
  • Format memory card from within phone before you give it a go.
  • Restart device after first boot.
  • Again, you must use the UDA and must not factory reset if you want Ovi Maps and 5 new Equalizers set.
Here is a short tutorial/guide to give you an idea of flashing the LinsPirat LTS Rev 2.0 custom firmware with three files. In fact most CFWs come with only 3 files: one core file, and two files that come with the CFW. Here is an example for the Nokia 5800:
Again, if you are using 5800, you have to use the PNHT CORE of 113mb and also rename the UDA and ROFS2 from v52 to v60 accordingly.
For example,  if you have ROFS2 named ‘RM-625_50.0.002_prd.rofs2.V21‘, and you downloaded the V51 core for 5233, you need to rename it as ‘RM-625_51.1.002_prd.rofs2.V21′.
Same applies for All RMS. For appropriate core files, see see the links provided above.

3 Files Flashing Method:

  1. Open JAF, go to BB5 tab.
  2. Tick two items there: i) Manual Flash, and ii) Dead USB.
  3. Make sure that all other boxes are unticked.
  4. Rename your Core file from .C00 to .C0r
  5. Click MCU and select the .C0r file (the renamed core file)
  6. Click PPM and select the ROFS2 file
  7. Click APE and select the uda.fpsx file.
  8. Now flash. Done!!!

How To Flash with custom Firmware..!!

Flashing a phone with a custom firmware is always a risky job. No sooner do you hack your mobile device, or install a third party firmware on it than you lose the warranty provided by your device’s manufacturer. It is our duty to warn you that if you commit a mistake, you might brick your phone. So, please be careful.
One question that is often asked is: “Why should I flash a custom firmware on my Nokia Symbian phone?” Well, the answer is rather simple one. A CFW is can give you more freedom, faster user interface, better battery life, the features of a better and newer firmware that is not provided to you by your device’s manufacturer due to hardware resevations. For example, you can enjoy the features of a Symbian^3 phone on your very Symbian^1 device. A custom firmware cooker tries to amalgamate various such features in one CFW.
To flash a custom firmware on your Symbian/Nokia touch device, you require the following tools:

Preparations Before Flashing CFW

First of all, you need to install Nokia Ovi Suite on your PC, so that your device connects well with PC. If you do not install the Ovi Suite, the JAF tool would not detect your device.
Then it’s always better to backup the settings and data like messages, contacts, images, etc. before you proceed. You could create a backup in two ways, either via the Ovi Suite or the file manager on your phone.
Our next step towards the procedure is to format your phone. It will delete all data and apps from your device. Since most of CFWs shift some of the system files on the memory card to give you more space on phone’s internal memory, it will be a good thing to format your memory card too. You can do this using your phone or using a memory card reader. I personally prefer to format my memory card using my own phone. Go to: File Manager / E: Memory Card / Click on Options button / Memory card option / Format.
In the next step, you will have to hard reset your phone. You can do this using two methods: The first one is by typing *#7370# (the default security code is 12345). The second method, which is better, is as follows:
  • Switch off your phone.
  • Then press and hold 3 hardware keys (Green + Red + Camera) of your device simultaneously.
  • While the three keys still pressed, press the Power button.
  • Keep holding these 3 keys until you see Nokia’s standard hand shake animation on screen.
  • Now release the 3 keys. Your phone should execute hard reset process.
On the completion of this process, you phone would be as it was when you bought it.

Download the Custom Firmware

We presume that you have already downloaded the desired CFW for your device. If not, download and save it to your desktop. Keep it in mind that the firmware version you want to flash is greater than the current one. Downgrading the firmware will make your phone unusable. For example, if the current software version of your phone is RM504 -39.0.003_001, it should be something like RM504 -40.0.003_001.  To check the software version of your device, dial *#0000# on your phone’s keypad.

Setting Up the JAF Emulator and P_KEY

  • Having checked the firmware version, install the JAF Emulator.
  • Now it’s time to extract the CFW zip file you downloaded earlier. Inside the extracted folder, you will find a folder like RM-XXX. (Do not forget to ensure that the RM number of the downloaded CFW matches your phone’s RM.)
  • Copy the RM-XXX folder to C:\ Program Files\ Nokia\ Pheonix\ Products. If you do not find these folders path, create yourself.
  • You will now have to run the JAF_PKEY_Emulator_v5.exe  and click on GO. Remember that this program runs only on Windows XP or Vista. If you are using Windows 7, right click on the .exe file and change compatibility mode. If the program gives an Error pop-up just ignore it and click on OK/Yes.
  • In the window that appears select the tab BB5 and uncheck the Normal Mode and CRT 308. Then tick these options: Manual Flash, Dead USB, and Use INI. Checking the last box  will show up a pop-up window where you have to select your phone model and its corresponding MRI.
  • If your phone’s model does not show in the list of devices exit  the JAF and go to C: \ Program Files \ Odeon \ jaf where you will find a file ” jaf_nok4models.ini “. Right click on the file and select Edit from the options and add your device’s model at the end of list and save changes. Here is an example:
  • If you have done everything correctly, your JAF will look like the screenshot below. Ensure that all four green circles are green (MCU, PPM, CNT, APE Variant) and the path for the firmware (as in the marked red square) is right. Now look for Phone Mode and select Normal from the list and wait for a few seconds.

Flashing CFW on Nokia Phones

Please, exit the Ovi Suite program if it is open or running in background (right click the Ovi Suite icon in the tray and chose exit). Next, switch off your phone and connect it to PC via USB.
Click on Flash button and click Yes on the dialogue box that pops up. The program will ask you to turn the phone on. What exactly you need to do is just press the power button for 1 second and release it. Remember, 1 second means just 1 second! You have not to start the phone. This is only an action that helps the JAF to detect your device and start flashing the firmware.
The flashing process will start and finish in a few minutes. When you get the Done message, restart the phone. Bingo! your phone should now be running on the newly installed custom firmware.

3 Files Flashing Method:

Here is a short tutorial/guide to give you an idea of flashing custom firmwares with only three files. In fact, most CFWs come with only 3 files: one core file, and two files that come with the CFW. If the CFW files do not contain the core file, you will have to download it and rename it accordingly.
  8. Now flash. Done!!!

How to Flash Original Firmware to Nokia Phones Using Phoenix

Some days ago I wrote a guide on flashing custom firmware on Symbian Touch devices by Nokia. While some people are adventurous enough to try various custom firmwares available on the web, some people  remain satisfied with the official firmware. Most of them even know  nothing about a firmware update, custom or original one. They buy a brand new phone and forget about it. It is always a good thing to know certain things about your mobile device. By updating the firmware of your device to the latest version, you can make most of it. It can give you more free space, more RAM, better battery life, user interface tweaks, new apps and lots more.

Compatibility:

Note that this guide is valid only for the S60v5, S^1, and S^3 devices manufactured by Nokia. If you have any other Symbian device manufactured by Samsung or Sony Ericsson, please do not follow this guide. But if you have any of the devices listed below, you can proceed.
  • Nokia 5228
  • Nokia 5230 Nuron
  • Nokia 5233
  • Nokia 5530
  • Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition
  • Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
  • Nokia C6
  • Nokia N97
  • Nokia N97 Mini
  • Nokia X6 (incl 8GB and 16GB)
  • Nokia N8
  • Nokia X7

Warning: Be Careful:

While upgrading the firmware of your device manually has many advantages, it is a risky procedure too. That is why many people shirk from it thinking it would turn their device into a costly paper-weight. And this fear is not without reasons. The chances of bricking a device during flashing a firmware onto a phone might be 100 percent, or none in millions. It is all about being careful in following the procedure. The more cautious you are, the more would be the chances of your success.
One more thing, keep it in mind that the firmware version you want to flash is greater than the current one. Downgrading the firmware will make your phone unusable. For example, if the current software version of your phone is RM504 -39.0.003_001, it should be something like RM504 -40.0.003_001.  To check the software version of your device, dial *#0000# on your phone’s keypad.

Preparations Before Flashing CFW:

  • First of all, you need to install Nokia Ovi Suite on your PC, so that your device can communicate well with  your PC. If you do not install the Ovi Suite, the Phoenix Tool would not detect your device.
  • Then it’s always better to backup the settings and data like messages, contacts, images, etc. before you proceed. You could create a backup in two ways, either via the Ovi Suite or the file manager on your phone.
  • Put your device in charging mode. The device should not go off in the middle of things due to low battery.
  • Download the latest version of Navifirm and save to you computer: Download
  • Using the Navifirm, download the firmware files according to the RM number of your device. Dial *0000# on your device to find the RM number /Product Code and firmware version.
  • Alternatively, you can also download the latest firmware from here:

Latest Original Firmware for Your Phone

The files would look like this:
    RM-559_40.0.002_prd.core.C00 (112.91 MB)
    RM-559_40.0.002_prd.rofs2.V22 (31.69 MB)
    RM-559_40.0.002_C01_prd.rofs3.fpsx (4.97 MB)
    RM-559_32.0.002_001_000_U001.uda.fpsx (7.81 MB)
    CCC_Alvin_pi191_CMT_for_Size_0578301_v1.bin (0.34 kB)
    HWT_Alvin_pi191_CMT_for_Size_0578301_v1.bin (0.21 kB)
    RM559_0578301_40.0.002_001.dcp (29.26 kB)
    RM559_0578301_40.0.002_001_signature.bin (1.16 kB)
    RM559_0578301_40.0.002_001.vpl (4.61 kB)
  • Download Phoenix_Service_Software_2011.08.003.45122.exe 99 MB and install it to your computer.
  • In case you want to return to the original firmware from a CFW, you will need the CFW files during the procedure.
  • Your next step towards the procedure is to format the concerned device. It will delete all data and apps from your device. Since most of CFWs shift some of the system files on the memory card to give you more space on phone’s internal memory, it will be a good thing to format your memory card too. Format your memory card and mass storage memory before flashing the phone. If you do not want to format the memory card,  at least delete everything in E:/sys, E:/private, E:/resource, F:/sys, F:/resource and F:/private folders by connecting the phone to PC in ‘Mass Storage mode’, or via a memory card reader.  You can also do it on your device. Go to: File Manager / E: Memory Card / Click on Options button / Memory card option / Format.
  • Note that you device must not be connected to the computer as we proceed to the flashing steps given below. Connect it as directed in Step N. 6 in the instructions.

Flashing the Firmware:

  1. I presume that you have already installed the Phoenix Tool during the preparatory steps. If not, install it now and launch it. Now go to ‘Tools’ tab and select ‘Data Package Download’. See the image:
  2. Now go to C:/Program Files/Nokia Packages/ (see above) and create a new folder there. Rename the folder as ‘RM-XXX‘. Here XXX means the RM number, ‘RM-559‘ for example. You will have to write the number of your device.
  3. Then go to this path on your computer C:/Program Files/Nokia/Phoenix/Products, and another folder with the same name as in step 1. It should look something like this:
  4. Now copy the original firmware files that you downloaded earlier to C:/Program Files/Nokia Packages/ RM-XXX, and to C:/Program Files/Nokia/Phoenix/Products/RM-XXX folders that you created in step 1 & 2.
  5. Let’s now come back to the Phoenix Tool and click on the ‘File’ tab, then select ‘Open Product’. Look at the images below and follow the instructions on them:
  6. Switch off your device.
  7. Now it’s time to flash the firmware to your device. Just as you see the ‘Firmware Update’ prompt as shown in the image above, connect the device via an USB cable and click on OK button in the Phoenix prompt (as in the image above).
  8. As soon as the Phoenix Tool detects the mobile device, it would start flashing the firmware to your phone.
  9. Wait for the process to complete. It won’t take much time, just be patient and do not disturb either the Phoenix or the device. When it is done, your device would roboot automatically.
  10. You can now disconnect the device and enjoy the new firmware on it.

Happy to Help:

Do not forget to share with us how it went for you. Or, if you encounter a problem, drop a comment. I would be happy to help. However, before you ask me for a solution, please take a look at the following fast aids:
  1. Format your device. To do this, type *#7370# on the keypad (the default security code is 12345).
  2. If you still face the problem, try a hard reset. Here is the method:
    • Switch off your phone.
    • Then press and hold 3 hardware keys (Green + Red + Camera) of your device simultaneously.
    • While the three keys still pressed, press the Power button.
    • Keep holding these 3 keys until you see Nokia’s standard hand shake animation on screen.
    • Now release the 3 keys. Your phone should execute hard reset process.
  3. Still not solved? Do not panic and repeat the flashing procedure: Step 1 to 10.
